CRNW Forecast of Sun, 2014-0309a

Rest of our guys (Ted, Griz, David and Terry) all paddled out this morning, mostly staggering their sessions so never more than two were out. Some nice waves coming through but not as consistent as in recent days -- I decided to take the day off from exercise and sun but may gon out later if the wind remains slack the tide is not too low.

Effective Friday evening

SHORT TERM FORECAST (Through Monday, March 10th) Highlights: Fun mix of Southern Hemi swell and some NW groundswell for best exposures.
South Pacific Swell/Surf: The current SW (210-220) swell will be easing on Saturday with surf in the chest-head high range at the better exposed breaks. Standout spots see sets running slightly overhead. A reinforcing pulse of SW swell will fill in Sunday to keep up similar size surf heights, before all Southern Hemi swell temporarily backs down on Monday.
North Pacific Swell: Long period NW swell from a recent storm near Hawaii will fill in further this weekend, with reinforcing pulses all the way through Monday. For the well exposed breaks, primarily in North Costa Rica, look for chest-shoulder, lully NW swell Saturday through Monday. Top spots see head high sets and may even get a few larger pulses here and there. Beach breaks that are exposed to both the SW and WNW swells rolling in then should see some really fun, crossed up peaks at times.
EXTENDED FORECAST (Tuesday, March 11th and beyond) Highlights: Combo of Southern Hemi and NPAC NW swells continues for next week. Watching for a good size S swell around mid month.
South Pacific Swell: Old swell eases into Tuesday the 11th. However, we will start to see a new SSW swell (190-205) slowly fill in Tuesday, with the largest waves late Tuesday and Wednesday, from a modest storm recently in the central SPAC. That looks good for chest-shoulder high surf at many breaks, with good spots up in the head high range. Those waves then fade Thursday.

Beyond that, we'll be monitoring for a larger, longer period S swell (180-195) for the 14th-16th from a storm now off the south end of South America. We'll have more details once we're able to gather data on this storm, but right now overhead surf looks like a possibility for the well exposed breaks. Stay tuned.

Surf forecast shown below for March 6th is on the money. There were probably some larger set waves at Northside Rock and Southside Rock and Lil Ala Moana. All had a great time. Double session day. Winds were light and variable. Cloudier and cooler than usual.

Griz has been riding his deep channel bodyboard; Terry brought a bodyboard due to luggage hassle/cost concerns; David has been riding his two mats and Xylem wood board, debating with us and himself which he prefers the most; Ted has ridden his Xylem, a mat and an HPD (recent design with relatively parallel rails) but his Xylem is his go-to ride; and I am riding my S&S Checkered RPM (yellow/blue). I am using 3 different pairs of fins: Viper Orange Dots, Viper Yellow Dots (5 in) and DaFins.

From an earlier email for the first afternoon and full day:

Touched down in Liberia almost 24 hrs ago. First surprise coming out of customs into the non-secure section, while looking for our driver, Adrian, was seeing, Surprise! Terry Newcomb. He had been here a week and decided to surprise us after his wife encouraged him to join his friends -- he had been a sad puppy moping around the house!

Hit the water late afternoon for a getting reacquainted surf -- light onshore winds but the Rock was delivering some of the goods. Everyone caught a few good ones before we had to go in.

This morning was beautiful. Slack wind, glassy conditions, waves breaking 4 to 7 ft. Five of us plus a shortboarder that we met two years ago on the early March trip.  He and his wife have been coming here 20+ yrs. Didn't seem crowded with all the waves. Ted and David surfed most of the time on the southside of the Rock, where I go and also a little further out at that Lil Ala Moana spot.

Happy surfy spaced out.

CRNW Forecast of Wed, 2014-0305am

Drive from Philly to JFK went well -- we did get lost around JFK looking for a gas station but we had plenty of time so need to panic. Pre-Check was a breeze with lines looking much longer if you were not "TSA approved." Terminal 5 is new, modern. The SkyTrain runs you over from the car rental site but not all the way to Terminal 5 -- combination of walking and passenger movers. Kind of like the long walks in De Gaulle or Heathrow and other Euro airports.

The forecast does not call for epic overhead swell the first two weeks of March but hints at consistent 3 to 6 ft.

Monday Afternoon Forecast.
SHORT TERM FORECAST (Through Thursday, March 6th)
Highlights: Fun zone mix of Southern Hemi swell and some WNW groundswell for the first half of the week.

South Pacific Swell/Surf: Fair run of storm activity in the SPAC last week leads to fresh Southern Hemi swell moving in this week. The current SW/SSW (200-215) swell was pushed out by a low in the South Central Pacific and it will start to ease Tuesday, for waves in the waist-chest-shoulder high zone at good exposures. As the old swell winds down a fresh, small SSW swell (190-200) begins to mix in. That sets up mainly thigh-chest high surf for Wednesday, as best breaks get plus sets on the right tides. Later in the day on Wednesday another new and slightly stronger SW (210-220) swell starts to show with some more plus sets. That swell continues to rise going into the second half of the week, and peaks late Thursday, with chest to head high surf for exposures as top spots seeing sets a foot or so overhead, showing largest late in the day.

Wind/Weather: The Guanacaste region does look to see a little pulse in offshore NE flow over the next few days, strongest near the Nica border. The better chances for at least light offshore flow all day will be north of Playa Negra, with the best shot near the Nica border. Afternoon onshores likely develop further south in the Guanacsate, especially the southern Nicoya Peninsula. NOTE - Good chance for lighter winds and an evening glass-off for many areas throughout Costa before dark. Northern Costa Rica stays mostly dry and sunny.

EXTENDED FORECAST (Friday, March 7th and beyond)
Highlights: Combo of SW and NW-WNW swells continues into the weekend.

South Pacific Swell: SW swell generated by a storm moving away from New Zealand last week will top out on Friday, for chest to head high surf at exposures as best breaks hit a foot or so overhead. Those waves continue to roll in on Saturday and then they wind down from the end of the weekend through next Monday, 10th.

Further out, forecast charts show potential for moderate scale SSW swell moving in by the middle of the upcoming week, 12th-13th, then a better round of SSW Southern Hemi showing for that Friday and the following weekend, 14th-16th. We'll keep you posted on the progress of those storm/swell systems as they develop.
