CRNW Forecast of Thu, 2015-0219a

Writing from the frozen tundra of the MidAtlantic regions it brings great joy and excitement to escape this zone for the warmth and waves of NW Costa Rica. In just two weeks the journey begins and concludes with a flight the following day, Sat, March 7th, 2015.

SolSpot updates it forecast tomorrow (guess they are on a one-week interval right now).

The long-range forecast from the supreme surf forecasting service:

SHORT TERM FORECAST (through Friday, February 20th):
Highlights: New NW swell slowly as SW swell slowly eases.

South Pacific Swell: SW swell is on it's way out Thurs/Fri. Most breaks hang in the waist-chest high zone while select standouts see lingering shoulder high sets.

New SSW swell trends up on Friday, then peaks this weekend. More details on that below.

Wind/Weather: Most areas through central and southern Costa Rica will see a typical diurnal wind pattern, with calm to locally light offshore flow for the early to mid mornings, before a moderate onshore sea-breeze gradually develops into the afternoon. NOTE - The wind will back off into the evenings for a glass-off for many locations before dark, especially the more sheltered/tucked away spots.

For northern Costa Rica look moderate to strong offshore flow over the next few days (strongest offshore flow for the northern half of the Nicoya Peninsula towards the Nicaragua border, lighter for the southern end).

Most of the region will see partly cloudy/sunny skies each day. However, there is still a chance for occasional passing thunderstorms/showers. Keep in mind that local storm activity can temporarily affect/change local wind conditions, as well as dirt roads due to rainfall.

EXTENDED FORECAST (Saturday, February 21st, and beyond):
Highlights: Fun size SSW swell. Another modest NW pulse due for the 22nd-24th.

South Pacific Swell: Medium size run of SSW swell (210-195) tops out this weekend and holds pretty steady through Monday. Look for chest-head high surf at the well exposed breaks, with overhead sets. Standouts are larger at times. Fading but still fun size surf through mid next week.

Smaller/reinforcing SSW swell moves in the last few days of the month to maintain waist-shoulder high+ surf at top breaks.

Beyond that, longer range charts show potential for a better run of SSW swell (220-200) to start up around March 2nd and peak the 3rd-4th. Still pending development.
