OBX Forecast of Fri, 2013-0906pm

Looks to be mostly choppy on Saturday's arrival day but wind slackens during the afternoon and low tide is around 4pm. Worth a check and maybe a dip.

Forecast Recap:
Moderate NE windswell picked up during the day for the exposed spots in the Outer Banks and Virginia Beach. Much smaller surf was found south of Cape Hatteras.
Forecast Outlook:
2-3-4' mix of NE windswell and SE swell on tap for Saturday. Better spots see chest high ranged sets. Conditions are still bumpy with NE winds 8-13kts but onshore diminish and trend more E/ESE through the day. Cleaner/notch smaller surf for Frisco tomorrow morning.

Best Bet: Later day as onshore flow begins to back off and swell generally gets more organized.
Worst Bet:
Early as NE winds still problematic.

The windswell that is currently in the water will fade over the next couple of days, but a new small to fun sized swell moves in and holds into early/mid next week. New front brings new windswell early next week as well.

OBX Forecast of Thu, 2013-0905pm update

The daily long-range Surfline afternoon update is in and... moves the chest to shoulder swell up a couple/few days. No doubt this will keep changing as this is the East Coast and these are unpredictable tropical storms. If you can't make it down on Saturday just be prepared for the chorus, "Ya shoulda been hare yasterday."

OBX Forecast of Thu, 2013-0905am

Just moments ago the Cape Verde tropical wave appeared on my display... now we have a traditional conga line albeit with only one storm at the TD level or higher.

In keeping with GP/p tradition it appears we will have another year with tropical storm swell, our lady this year being TS Gabrielle. Just 12 hours ago she was forecast not to develop beyond being a tropical depression. The previous week she had been a mere low level "area of interest." Although we should not expect any epic overhead surf we shall have surf. Pray for good winds!

Two models forecast Gabrielle to maintain a northerly/NNW track which would be welcome for our swellage outcomes. The GFS model reminds me of a swell some 5 or 6 years ago where the storm did figure eights in the "gulf of South Carolina" for 3 days or so. Quite the swell generator for an entire week. One can only be hopeful.

In the meantime we will count our blessings that we won't be faced with this (wave cam pic of The Lighthouse this morning).

OBX Forecast of Tue, 2013-0903pm

Wave outlook improves... caveat emptor: it is still an East Coast long-range forecast!

In the news

The outlook for next Tuesday/Wednesday and the back half of next week is of lower confidence than normal as the latest computer model guidance suggests the tropical disturbance in the eastern Caribbean Sea and a passing frontal boundary will help provide an increase of windswell/swell for the region. We will take a conservative approach this far out and so we are expecting a modest increase in local windswell and SE swell mix for Tuesday/Wednesday and into the second half of next week. Stay tuned as we closely monitor this over the next several days.

TROPICS

We are watching an area of low pressure is located in the eastern Caribbean Sea this afternoon that is tracking slowly towards the WNW. We will continue to monitor this feature as it moves near the Greater Antilles over the coming days then tracks near the Turks and Caicos Islands late in the week/over the weekend.

Elsewhere, we are watching a tropical wave near the Yucatan Peninsula that is expected to move into the Bay of Campeche during the middle part of the week. This system will not impact our surf outlook.

Finally, a disorganized tropical wave has pushed off the West African coastline. We will have several days to track this system as it moves NW/WNW past the Cape Verde Islands.

OBX Forecast of Mon, 2013-0902am

The long-range Surfline forecast has not changed -- still showing 1-2 ft all week. On a real positive the past 5 days in the OBX has been showing some nice ridable surf somewhere between S. Nags Head and south Hatteras Island. For the hopeful, there is a 50-50 chance that surf will come our way compliments of a low pressure system of interest that is currently designated as 97L (see below).

The GFS Global run forecasts this position on Mon, Sept 9th.

OBX Forecast of Sat, 2013-0831pm

Here we go again... East Coast flip-flopping forecasts. What is new and different from recent weeks and months is having two tropical waves/disturbances in the larger Atlantic Basin. It remains to be seen how these two systems play out.

One positive is that the Outer Banks have been providing for at least knee-waist-chest high surf somewhere between S. Nags Head and S. Hatteras Island. Rewards go to the hunters.

OBX Forecast of Fri, 2013-0830am

Yes... we have been there before and I assume there will be access. But maybe Mile Marker 71 area will be better form and power?

This system coming off of Africa towards the Cape Verdes Island may be the key to our prospects.

Long range is even more promising... just remember it is a long-range East Coast forecast!

NW CR Forecast of Thu, 2013-0620am

There are some signs of swell in the water but thus far this 5-10 foot has been a bust. Looks mostly like local wind swell out front and down the coast from what I have heard. My guess is that storms out at sea have mucked it up a bit.

I was the only occupant on the premises last night. Terry and group return late this afternoon/early evening. Company!

NW CR Forecast & Report of Wed, 2013-0619a

Terry and I paddled out this morning around 8am or so for a short session -- neither of us caught any memorable waves but it was some exercise and it was wet. The swell appeared to be showing some signs of the new swell. Wish he was here tomorrow morning! Very sunny this morning but it was amazing how the clouds moved in during a 15 minutes spell. It showered shortly thereafter. Very buggy during coffee time earlier this morning.

NW CR Forecast & Report of Mon, 2013-0617

After seeing Atlanta Surfer off at 8am, Terry, his nephew and I suited up and paddled out. It seemed like a mixed swell rolling through with the "bombs" shading toward Rock Northside. We had some fun rides -- I had a few drops from Rodrigo's Rock Garden. Isidro caught a nice wave just barely missing the inside rock line... we were a bit concerned about him! Wiating to the upcoming swell :)

Father's Day special dinner: tasty grilled lamb, fresh made pita bread, yogurt sauce, and bbq type sauce and salad.

NW CR Forecast & Rpt of 2013-0616p

After seeing Dave off at 8am and with Terry riding with him to the airport, Tim and I hit the surf. Small waves in high tide conditions. We each caught a number of fun waves but it was certainly on the small side. Many weak ones rolling through with the occasional strong wave ride.

Another afternoon rain. Oftentimes we can make it out later in the afternoon... only one afternoon has been a washout, but there certainly has been a lot more rain this June compared to last June. More people as the villa, too.

We also shared a farewell surf with Dave late yesterday afternoon, then drinks and dinner with the NYC girls.

NW CR Forecast of Fri, 2013-0614a

Rather small this morning out front. The two new guys, Philly and Atlanta, walked up to Turtleheads and Terry paddled out to the Rock simply because the water is beautiful, and hopeful for maybe a couple of rides. Hope swell picks up today for an afternoon session. Swell is certainly on the way for sometime on Wed, June 19th and appears to be in store through our last full day, Saturday.

NW CR Forecast/Report of Thu, 0613p

Sloppy on-shore wind sessino yesterday afternoon with lots of tidal push towards the shore. Oh, the water felt heavy. This morning was a nice one-hour session at The Wash before breakfast. Big rains mid-morning.

NW CR Forecast & Rpts of Tue, 2013-0611p

So far, soooo good.
Day 1 afternoon: Rock Northside in 3 to 7 foot surf. Funky conditions with so much water moving around in a dead SW swell.
Day 2 afternoon: Outer Wash in 6 to 8 surf. Everyone caught some. Many experienced the power of the Outer Wash, for good or for worse.
Day 3 afternoon: The Wash. The two new boys, AtlantaSurfer and PhillyViking paddled out about an hour before Terry and I. they set up at Rock Northside but weren't catching much and didn't yet understand the workings of The Wash. Then they were tempted by El Centro/Middle Rock but that was a bust (and a no-no) as well. They had started out there the same time Terry and I paddled out to The Wash. We proceeded to have 2-3 hrs of nearly non-stop waveriding and our friends joined us about mid-session for orientation and some "Rick Miale" rides.

Looks like a 24 hr pulse coming through and then some long period waves a couple days later.
