Base x Depth
Large: 3-7/8 x 2 (3.875 x 2.0)
Small: 3-3/4 x 1-3/4 (3.75 x 1.75)
Surf Conditions: 4-6 ft. waves with larger peaks on the take-off, at The Wash. SSW 14-15 sec swell. Strong Papagayo winds.
Evaluation: A progressive step up from the small sidebites I had been using since last June's sea trials. A noticeable improvement in projection on turns but sufficient ability to quickly turn and pivot. Speed off of turns. Also could do controlled side slips.
Sunday afternoon report: Dave and I were standing "wave watch" and waiting for Griz and Rick to arrive. We were out at the Rock by 3pm, less Griz, who was standing "Rock Watch." The waves were kicking nicely in Wash Country. Plenty of peaks to choose from and all three of us had rides ranging from good to great. The Papagayos were blowing fiercely but every so often you could catch a wave during a wind reprieve which was much better than flying blind. I would assess the breaking waves in the 4 to 6 ft range with some larger sets at 7-8 ft on the peak during take-off. Larger waves were breaking on the outside but were not ridable and the Outer Wash not even an option with the Papagayo winds blowing hard. We were very satisfied puppies. Dinner was the BBQ special of chicken, beef and pork ribs with baked potato and garden salad.
Monday morning report: High tide was very early and the swell dropped off substantially from yesterday. The 3-liner below is reflective of today's swell weakness. Griz and David paddled out but didn't catch many. Griz scored the "wave of the morning," really the first only wave he caught for a ride that I recall, from the inside peak (if you are going Wash Inside, Wash Middles and Wash Regular just inside the Rock). David joined Griz about 45 minutes later as the tide was dropping even further. A few waves were breaking at The Wash, but you had to be patient. On the inside you invariably were out of alignment or too far in and had to contend with whitewater. The force of the Papagayos have dropped off considerably since 5a, as shown below. Looks like we will have overnight winds.
I am hopeful we will have better luck with the incoming tide. Fingers crossed for Wed, Thu and Fri, which look to be regular Wash days.
